SIM 3305 Centrifugal Compressor with Lube and Seal Oil

SIM 3305 Centrifugal Compressor with Lube and Seal Oil model consists of a centrifugal compressor which is used to increase the pressure of a standard fuel gas stream. The speed of the compressor is controlled using the suction or discharge pressure of the compressor. The purpose of this model is to introduce the operating and control concepts relating to the use of a centrifugal compressor.

About the sim

Model Description

The model is separated into three areas; a) the feed knockout pot, b) the compressor including the gas discharge cooling and c) the discharge knockout pot. A built in ESD system serves as a platform to protect the process from inconvenient process conditions.

The feed gas to the process contains condensate which is largely removed by the feed knockout pot. This condensate collects in the bottom of the vessel and is periodically discharged to maintain the liquid level between a high and low set-point. The pressure in this vessel is the feed pressure to the compressor.

The compressor increases the pressure of the gas by using a centrifugal fan which is driven by a motor. Varying the compressor speed can be used to control the gas flowrate. Compressing a gas causes its temperature to rise and this is controlled by passing the discharge gas through an air-cooled heat exchanger.

The compressor is fitted with auxiliaries which ensure a smooth operation and protection of the components of the compressor. There is a fitted seal oil system which prevents the movement of the pressurised gas through the compressor bearings. The lube oil system is used to lubricate the bearings (both radial and thrust bearings) that support the compressor shaft. When either of these auxiliaries is not running, the compressor will be automatically shut down by the ESD system.

The model includes an anti-surge recycle line which is used to recycle gas to prevent insufficient forward flow. Also included is a plot of the compressor operating curve of head v. flow, which shows the current operating condition. The model has a flare line attached to the outlet of the discharge scrubber.
