TSC Simulation’s Interactive Virtual Plant Models Transform Education  

TSC Simulation successfully collaborated with The University of Bath to deliver a series of 3D Interactive Virtual Plant (IVP) models to their Chemical Engineering department. 

The models cover various industrial processes, including a Three Phase Separator, Centrifugal Compressor, and Condensate Tank Farm. 

Inspiring feedback from the university summarises the valuable comments received from students, faculty, and administrators, reflecting the tangible impact and enhanced understanding achieved through the adoption of our 3D IVP simulation solution. 

The simulations are not only immersive but also offer accurate process representations, including Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), startup, shutdown, and maintenance scenarios. This allows students to engage in group activities, working simultaneously via the cloud on the university’s network. The collaborative nature of the simulations enhances the learning experience for students.

The models serve a practical purpose in training Field and Control Room Operators, enabling them to practice start-up and shut-down procedures, problem solving, and hazard awareness in a controlled virtual environment.

The inclusion of a powerful scenario and fault system allows for the creation of complex problems on the virtual plant, adding a practical and challenging dimension to the training.

The TSC IVP deepened the communication and collaboration of design team members. As a digital technology, TSC IVPs help bridge the critical gap in Chemical Engineering education as identified by the IChemE’s Learned Society Committee via the Digitalisation Technical Advisory Group 

Before using the IVP, 58% of first-year students reported a “Very low” understanding of a shut-down procedure for a three-phase separator. The IVP’s impact on their perceived knowledge of the subject increased to “High” for 58% of the students and “Very high” for 11%.  

The capabilities of the IVP are deployed in any lecture theatre on campus via a cloud-based feature, which facilitates the delivery of many different Chemical Engineering aspects commonplace in an industrial setting. Moreover, IVPs offer teaching via a technological tool industry use to train employees. The cloud-based nature of the IVPs is also fully compatible with virtual and on-campus Widening Participation, Open, and Applicants Visit Days events, allowing us to enhance our engagement and recruitment activities further.”

The feedback from the University is positive, emphasising the value of TSC’s IVPs in addressing critical gaps in Chemical Engineering education. The mention of the IChemE’s Learned Society Committee and the Digitalisation Technical Advisory Group suggests that the use of TSC’s simulations align with industry needs and emerging trends in digital technology for chemical engineering education.
